Eight areas that shape a thoughtful transition.

    01

    Clean, straightforward financials

When a buyer cannot follow the numbers, they perceive risk, which can impact the price.

    02

    Standing on its own

Many owners run more than one company, and they quietly share services. A buyer needs to know what each shared service costs on its own.

    03

    Family in the business

Family employees are often the most loyal people on the payroll. A buyer will still wonder whether they stay once the family is no longer in charge.

    04

    Without you in the room

Buyers pay for what transfers. If the business is you, there is less to buy.

    05

    People and know-how

A buyer will look at tenure, depth and documented know-how to see where knowledge is concentrated in one person.

    06

    Customers

Revenue a buyer can count on is worth more than revenue that rides on a handful of relationships.

    07

    Loose ends

Small paperwork problems found late in a deal slow it down, and sometimes reopen the price.

    08

    Your plan

Owners who know their value, their number and their next chapter make clearer decisions, and better deals.

    Common questions

How do I know if my business is ready to sell?

Look at it the way a buyer will: whether your numbers are easy to follow, whether the business runs without you, who on your team might leave, how spread out your customers are, and whether the paperwork is in order. The scorecard covers all eight of these areas in 24 questions, in about 5 minutes.

    How is the scorecard scored?

You answer each question No, Somewhat, Yes or Not sure. Yes earns 2 points, Somewhat earns 1, and No or Not sure earn 0. Each section is worth 6 points, for 48 in total. Any section at 3 or under is flagged as something a buyer would likely discount, and every Not sure answer is listed as something to find out.
